Psychological Sense Of Community In Online And Offline Environments

Participant Information Sheet

Please be advised that data collection has now ended, and the researchers have moved on to analysing and writing up their results.

My name is Laura Williams and I am conducting research for my Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) degree at Curtin University.

This is an online survey examining sense of community in online and offline environments. If you are 18 years and over, currently play World of Warcraft and have been playing World of Warcraft for at least the last two months, I would like to invite you to take part in this survey. This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and will involve answering questions about yourself, your neighborhood and World of Warcraft. By clicking on “Link to questionnaire” below you are confirming that you have read this information and consent to participating in this research.

Once you have completed the questionnaire, you will be automatically directed to a web page where you can chose to enter in a draw to win a $50 Amazon.com gift voucher. Your email address will not be linked to your responses. You will also be given information about how to access the results from this research.

Your involvement in this research study is completely voluntary and the data that you provide will remain anonymous. If you no longer wish to take the survey, you are free to stop at any time up to the final submission of your questionnaire. Data will be accessed only by myself and by my supervisor and will be stored on a secure server for five years before it is erased.

The data collected will appear in my Honours dissertation and may be published in academic journals or presented at academic conferences.

To participate in this research, please ensure that you meet the following criteria:

  • I am 18 years of age and older
  • I currently play World of Warcraft
  • I have played World of Warcraft for at least the last two months

This study has been approved by the Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (Approval Number Psych & SP 2011 13). The Committee comprises members of the public, academics, lawyers, doctors and pastoral carers. Its main role is to protect participants.
